Historical Facts
A Mother's breast is a feeding breast. Breastfeeding has always
had a role not only in the small family unit, but also of a larger
community unit. It has always been obvious that there is a strong,
direct connection between the health of the people and the health of
the community. In her article, Yalom relates that in the mid 18th
century many mothers in different European countries (especially the
Netherlands) ceased from hiring wet nurses and started more and more
to breastfeed their own children. "A woman suckling a child was
perceived as an important factor that contributes to the financial
welfare of a woman's household and community. One hundred years
later, breastfeeding became an inseparable part of the French
revolution." At the beginning of the 20th century Psychology and
Psychoanalysis was a strong side in developing the perception which
we hold today that breastfeeding is very important for a child's
emotional development.
