First days of
breastfeeding
It is time for birth. The baby emerges from your womb, following
nine months of living under optimal conditions. He now needs to
adapt to a whole new world, and we can make for a swift adjustment.
It is important that we create as supportive an environment as we
possibly can, and one of the best ways to do this is by
breastfeeding. . The time you spend feeding the baby is an
important foundation for the bond between you and your baby. This
repetitive experience builds his trust and realization that "someone
that is ready to anticipate my needs and provide them" He learns to
make the connection between that "someone" and you, his mother.
Breastfeeding is a conversation, a form of communication between
you and your baby. When your baby gets hungry he will make a sign:
panting, crying. You, his mother, come with milk. At first the baby
will eagerly search for your breast, being hungry as he is. He then
pauses and starts alternating his attention between mom and the
milk, thus, initiating conversation just like in a game of catch,
the ball of conversation is passed in intervals between the two of
you. He expects you to catch the ball, and he awaits your reaction.
He craves for you to look at him when he is looking at you, and
sometimes for you to talk to him. When you are looking at him,
paying attention to him at these pauses, he can feel your interest
in him and feels how important he is to you. For this reason it is
important, at least in the first few weeks of breastfeeding to try
and be focused on your baby. Look at him, caress him. At this
intimate hour don't watch TV or talk on the phone. Dedicate yourself
to him completely. In doing so you are laying a positive ground for
his development. Professional Nursing Advisors insist holding the
baby in an uncomfortable position is the prime reason that most
women do not have success breastfeeding. As soon as the baby is
born, from the first feeding, you should put an emphasis on the most
comfortable way to place your baby on your breast. This way,
breastfeeding will easily become a source of happiness and health to
both of you. It is possible to breastfeed in an array of positions.
Choose the position most comfortable to you, making sure that it is
also a comfortable position for your baby to nurse without making an
effort on his part. Remember: By breastfeeding your baby you gain
the opportunity to form a strong bond between the two of you.
Whichever method you to feed your baby, it should be an experience
you both share and enjoy.
